Arriving at the beach at dawn, there were small (approximately 1ft long) pieces of ice strewn across the black sandy beach, but as the tide turned, huge icebergs were carried to shore and washed up onto the beach. This is such an amazing sight.... so surreal. The ice is so varied, smooth ice that looks like glass, blue ice, white ice and black ice or with grey flecks of ash from the volcano. Then there is pretty, crispy, textured ice like this which looks almost crystallised. Simply stunning.
Iceland is an wonderful country, one amazing and surreal experience after the next. This ice has come loose from the nearby Vatnajokull glacier, the largest glacier in Europe. It stays in the Jokulsarlon lagoon before it lands here on the nearby Black Beach.
Location: Black Beach, Jokulsarlon, South Iceland
